I love how wacky these games are, I've never done a full playthrough of Mother, but I'm on my second or third playthrough of Earthbound (Mother2), and I plan on devoting a lot of time to Earthbound 2 (Mother 3 fan translation) once I'm done.
The battle systems are weird, the weapons are weird, the writing is insane, and the themes throughout are deep and edgy, I don't know HOW these games got made, but I thank God/science for the wonderful set of instances that made these games possible.
I'd go as far as to say that Earthbound is my second favorite SNES era game. It is dang close to Trigger.

That's cool. I just loved it cause it reminded me of Chrono Trigger when it came out. Not that the gameplay or plot are anything like CT, it's just that the game is different than pretty much every other RPG ever made.
As far as Square is concerned, its best games (SNES era) were Trigger and FF3 (/6) and that's because that FF was a refined version of the same system they'd been using and a lot of optional recruitable characters and a compelling story. Trigger was a fresh take on all the cliche things used in RPGs.
Earthbound was like a parody of those same RPG cliches. But not in fanfic form or comics, it's a whole game. And not just that, it's a series. It takes place in Eagleland, one of your characters is from Winters, a country to the north of Eagleland, and at some point you go to Summers, which I think is to the south. Eagleland=America, Winters=Canada, and Summers=Mexico if I recall correctly.

Yeah. CT is just such a different take on the RPG Genre of the SNES Era. FFVI was very compelling. I'm replaying through that game as well.
My beef with EB is the gameplay. I just never found it very fun. =/

The battles are a lot of button mashing and the item storage system is really annoying. I just want to get through it and get the plot down all the way to the end. It's been years since I finished it!
