I have had a lot going on lately, including doing homework for class. The class happens to be Fundamentals of Game Design. LOL at that! Anyway, that means I've been tinkering with Game Maker, cause RPG Maker projects aren't any good for my class. I'll upload my games when the term is over, and link to them so anybody who feels like it can play. One of them is an Epoch shooter game, a la Space Invaders or Galaga.
Anyway, I wanted to post about my intentions with this project. Most fan projects use a few new sprites or take sprites from other games and use them, and try to re-create maps and worlds that people who played the original are familiar with. What I would like to do is more (and less) ambitious, in that I want most of my sprites, maps, techs, and items (wherever possible) to be custom made and for all intents and purposes, new.
The actual game Chrono Shift will be short, probably no longer than Lance's Chrono Alter, but the world will be vast and explorable, the characters (NPC and PC) will be recognizably different from each other and from CT, and you should walk away thinking something along the lines of "that was an example of a good little idea executed BEAUTIFULLY".
If all goes according to plan, it should take a while, but it will truly be a pretty game, and the plot twists I've thrown in should make it into an addictive formula.
Unfortunately, there are a few areas where the project will inevitably fall short. This is due to the nature of the prequel. There are certain events that MUST happen in order for it to seamlessly blend from Shift to Trigger, and this makes alternate endings less likely, but if I can plan some creative ones, you'll see them. Side-quests will be necessary, and the story is fairly intricate. While Shift is taking place, none of the gurus have perfected any form of time travel. This makes the act of traveling through time impossible DURING the game, though temporal research is a staple to the plot.
There are certain aspects of CT I'd love to be able to utilize, but remain in the gray area right now. Namely, these include a caterpillar walking system and dual techs. I don't know how to do them right, so I don't know yet if they will be included in-game. It is reasonable to assume that even if I do figure these things out, they won't be included in the initial release.
This is not intended to be a warning or to get people less interested, but rather intended to be a sort of small announcement to clear up what I felt was a fuzzy picture I'd painted. Just sort of an update.
I'll be finishing up my "young guru" sprites tonight, and hopefully have them up for critique before tomorrow! Wish me luck! Peace and love to you all.
